Men of Promise Introduction In today’s world for the most part have become products of our society in many ways. Society however has always changed as the years have gone by. There is no real constant, when it comes to how we should live, act and interact with others. There is God’s word which directs a man in the way he should go, however, for a lot of men in today’s world, they rarely leave room for the word of God in the midst of their occupations, friends, family and recreational time. You have all of the media targeted messages running around in a flurry. Pornography is usually at the heart of it. There are the magazines in the stores at the checkout counter, adult book stores, billboards, provocatively dressed women, sensual commercials, sex hot lines, sex sites on the internet, sexually targeted email, pornographic movies and the like. Other things that are highly targeted are commercial, billboards, magazines, ads and displays concerning cigarette smoking, drinking, gambling, body building, drugs, sexual enhancements and what the world deems as sexy and manly and being desirable by women. Other than what a man may encounter in church, if he attends, there is relatively very little in this world that portrays positive things such as character, integrity, decency, honor, being the spiritual leader of the household and godliness. Satan and his demonic forces have really managed to launch a deluge of mind controlling, mind altering messages to the men of this world today, which has helped to break down the functioning of the family leaving children fatherless and wives husbandless. It’s the cause of many divorces, affairs, drug and alcohol usage, law breaking and causes men to prostitute themselves with the lusts of this world. Women’s movements for equality have not helped the demeanor of men as well. With women having become liberated so to speak, men are no longer looked to for the sole support of their family. And in the families where women don’t work and are stay at home mom’s, the man is still financially dispensable due to the availability of social welfare funds to aid the women if the husband were to be absent in the home. Many men have fallen prey to depression and unemployment as well, depression due to trying to find their place in this world and knowing who they are. Their role has been so easily replaced by women that they have a hard time figuring out, exactly what defines them. In large part, men have lost the sense of honor, respect and dignity, both by not having it from the women in their life, most often their children too, as well as not knowing how to be honoring and respectful of God. Men have been taught they must do it on their own, that they are not to show their feelings, that their pride is the only thing they have, not to take hand outs, and not to be weak. Yet they continue to lose their place in this world. Society continues to prey upon all of their weaknesses and none of their strengths. And the morals, precepts, decrees and laws of God have all gotten lost in the mix of things. The only men in this world today, that have a strong sense of dignity and direction, are those who are led by the Spirit of God. And while church feeds that sense of direction, the Bible says that older men (spiritually) should be coming alongside the younger men (spiritually) and should be teaching them how to be men of prayer respect, obedience, mercy, inheritance, submission and election. The purpose of this perpetual study, is to address the issues of today’s men in this world, to help them regain their sense of dignity and integrity, to retake their God given positions in ministry and in the home and to teach them how to be just and humble, making God the center of their lives and allowing God to raise them up to be the spiritual leaders that he has predestined them to be. God desires that men take their God given roles in life and that women come along side them in submission. Women can only do this, when men are truly submissive to God. CREED (This is to be recited at the beginning of each meeting) I am a man of promise. I am a man of prayer, respect, obedience, mercy, inheritance, submission and election. I will glorify God. THE MICAH SEAL (This too is to be recited at the beginning of each meeting) I am an everlasting covenant with Jesus Christ. I am to do justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with my God, in submission to His authority and Lordship over and in my life, under obedience to Him in all my ways for all my days. ACROSTIC MEN OF PROMISE PROMISE “And will give our attention to prayer and he ministry of the word.” Acts 6:4 RESPECT “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.” 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 OBEDIENCE “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” John 14:23 MERCY “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve. If it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously, if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.” Romans 12:6-8 INHERITANCE “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on his right, Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.” Matthew 25:31-34 SUBMISSION “Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older, All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may life you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be self controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power forever and ever. Amen.” 1 Peter 5:5-11 ELECTION “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. Therefore, my brother, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall.” 2 Peter 1:5-11 PRAYER FAMILY FIRST “And will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.” Acts 6:4 Men should first learn to pray and impart blessings upon their own families. As it says above, men should give their attention to prayer and the ministry of the word. God planned for life to be imparted to His children through the spoken blessing. The Old Testament fathers expected their blessings to be fulfilled in the lives of their children. The same expectation can rest in the hearts of men today, whether it be their children, wives parents, siblings or relatives. God used the spoken blessing personally to impart divine favor to His people. He verbally blessed Adam and Eve Genesis 1:28, Abraham Genesis 12:1-3 and Jacob Genesis 32:2-32 . Jesus even began His three year training program with His disciples by speaking a series of blessings over their lives Matthew 5:1-16 . The record is endless throughout the Bible of blessings being spoken over the people of God. This was written by Pastor William T. Ligon, Sr. of Brunswick, Georgia This is a profound statement that is often overlooked by men today. The power of the spoken word into their lives of their families still exists today. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 God desires than in everything that you do you come to his throne of grace in prayer and handle all of your interpersonal relationships with prayer and imparting blessings. If you are part of no other ministry than that alone, God deems it to be your utmost priority in the ministry of the word. And if you are part of other ministries, God requires that your ministry of prayer take precedence, that you be careful not to neglect this important part of ministering the word to your family first and then to others. Intercessory In Job 16:19 he says; “Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high. My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; on behalf of a man he pleads with God as a man pleads for his friend.” Jesus is our intercessor. But man still needs prayers of the saints to be lifted up on his behalf on a continual basis. In Moses’ life we see the supreme Old Testament example of the power of intercessory prayer. On several occasions he prayed intensely to God to change his declared will, even when God had told Moses his course of action. Numbers 14:1-19 There are several examples in the New Testament as well, for example; Peters release from prison Acts 12:5, 12 praying for the sick and each other James 5:14-16. Paul himself, knew the importance of the prayers of the saints Romans 15:30-32 . Prayer List ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ RESPECT Living Your Life To Please God, Not The World “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.” 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 Paul tells us in Titus 2:2-8 “Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance. Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.” There is a song I’m reminded of that says, “Lord I want to be just like you, cause he wants to be just like me, I want to be a holy example for his innocent eyes to see. Let me be a living Bible Lord, for my little boy to read, I want to be just like you cause he wants to be like me.” When you begin to think in that light, realizing that not just your children, but your family, your friends, your neighbors and even those whom you do not know personally, are all watching you, are any of your actions, words or deed something that you would not want someone to imitate? Actions “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.” Ephesians 4:22-28 Think about the way that you act with your children, family friends, towards your neighbors, towards women, towards your boss, co-workers, church family, on the road while driving, waiting in a long line, members in your community such as store clerks, restaurant servers, band and post office personnel, etc. Are your actions something you would want your child or anyone’s child to imitate? Surely if they are not, you certainly wouldn’t want any other adult to imitate them either! LIVING TESIMONY I’d rather see a lesson than to hear one any day I’d rather one should walk with me than merely show the way I can soon learn how to do it If you let me see it done But your tongue too fast in action Will only make words run All the lectures you deliver May be very wise and true But I’d rather get my lesson By observing what you do I may not understand you And the fine advice you give But there is no misunderstanding How you act and how you live Author Unknown Words “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:29-31 Aside from filthy language, what about hurtful speech? Have your words to your family, friends or anyone else been hurtful? How about your words regarding others? Have any of them been slanderous, or considered unflattering or gossip? “Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.” Ephesians 5:4 What about filthy language? What about foolish talk? What about coarse joking? “You brook of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” Matthew 12:34 That which comes from your mouth is what is on or in your heart. Even Jesus said, “It’s not what goes into a man that defiles him, but what comes out.” Matthew 15:11 and Mark 7:15 Deeds “But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. For this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person such a man is an idolater has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth and find out what pleases the Lord.” Ephesians 5:3,5-10 What about your deeds towards women? Are they respectful or sinful and impure? Jesus said in Matthew 5:27-28 “You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” What Christ condemns is not the sudden thought that Satan may place in a person’s mind or an improper desire that arises suddenly. Rather it is a wrong thought or desire that is accompanied by the approval of one’s will. It is having an immoral desire that would seek fulfillment if the opportunity arose. The inner desire for illicit sexual pleasure, if contemplated and not resisted, is sin. This also includes taking pleasure in scenes of immorality, such as films or pornographic material. Not just pornographic films, it can be theatre or television movies, cartoons or sitcoms that have sexual scenes in them and even now, the internet, email and IM’s. When you view or take part in these scenes or venues, are you enjoying them, commenting about them or repulsed and embarrassed by them? Remember, how you view them is how your children and or siblings will view them. How do you want your children and or siblings viewing women or sex? What about greed? Greed too is lusting after something. It can be a person or a thing. It is wanting more than what God has allotted to you in life, it is not being content with what God has given you and constantly seeking after more. It’s looking at things that you desire and want to have for yourself, and doing whatever is necessary to obtain it, and if you are unable to obtain it, you still spend a great deal of time in the challenge of trying to obtain it. It’s all you think about, it consumes you. You can relate it to a woman. Let’s say you see a woman and you desire to get to know her better. Maybe you are not lusting after her in your heart but you are thinking about her constantly, when you are at home or in public at work or in your car. You can’t sleep, you can’t eat, your thoughts are all directed towards how to get that woman in your life. While at first you may not be lusting after her, the greed and desire of your heart will eventually take you there. If you are single and your relationships with women are not respectful, this is an area that you need to get in line with God’s will. If God has a partner in mind for you, then seek his will. Be praying for that unknown or known partner, concentrate on allowing God to make you the man of God that you will need to be for your future wife and family. It is more important that you concentrate on your relationship with Christ and making Him the center of your life, and that you pray for your eventual partner that they too will have their lives centered on Christ. It takes three people to make a marriage work, you, your spouse and Christ. Christ must be the center of your life and her life in order for Him to be the center of your marriage or pre-marital relationship. Women are supposed be submissive to their husbands, and God commands husbands to live considerately with their wives as the weaker partner and a fellow heir in the inheritance of the kingdom. Women can only be submissive to a husband that is submissive to God. When women know that their husband is surrendered to Christ, that he gets his every direction from God through fervent prayer, they can trust their husbands to lead and guide them in the way that God would have them to go. They are then submissive to the husband as being the spiritual leader of the household, and thereby fulfill their command by God to be submissive to him. So this is the light in which you should be viewing women that you are looking towards as a prospective relationship. And none of it involves lustful thinking. Rather, training, a renewing of your mind, actions, words and deeds. And greed does not play into any relationship in your life as well. A man who is not content with what God has given him and is continually seeking after more, will never find rest. “Then He said to them, Watch out, be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” Luke 12:15 “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature; sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all and is in all. Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Colossians 3:5 It’s not what a man has that defines him, but who a man has living within him, for only Christ and His ways are worthy of respect. So how much of Christ do you have in you? It is giving all that you are, for all that he is, that is the journey set before you and is the evidence of the measure of true success. Who you are when you are alone is who you are in Christ. And that is the inner man that is portrayed to others. So what are you portraying? Make a list of what you have been portraying and pray over that list daily, giving these things over to God continually. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ OBEDIENCE To Obey Is Better Than Sacrifice “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him and we will come to him and make our home with him.” John 14:23 The Lord is very clear here. If you love him, you will obey him. You’ve read what it is so far to be a woman of worship, which encompasses prayer and respect, and you will go on to read how truth and honor come into play as well. To honestly become that, means you will have to look at your lists, your character defaults, your short comings and your pride and be willing to surrender to the living God. It means you will have to stop living as though you cannot attain to all that God wants of you, and be obedient without question as he calls you to be. Make an affirmation of faith here. If you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything. So make your stand, make a list of areas you need to be obedient in. Now write down your plan of action to accomplish obedience in your life with Christ. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ MERCY Showing Mercy “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” Luke 6:36 Even though the Israelites often broke their side of the covenant-agreement with God, he showed great mercy to his people. Instead of abandoning them, he offered them his patient love and ready forgiveness his mercy in action. It is because of God’s mercy that he offers salvation through Jesus Christ to those who are lost and without hope. “But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions it is by grace you have been saved.” Ephesians 2:4-5 As men of God, men of promise, you should be merciful to others. Having the power to bring judgment upon another, but choosing to show mercy when appropriate. Are there people in your life, whom God would want you to be showing mercy to? List them in the space provided. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ INHERITANCE The Sheep Of His Hand “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, He will sit on His throne in heavenly glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people once from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on His right, Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.” Matthew 25:31-34 The time will come when we will be counted and the sheep of His hand will inherit the kingdom he has prepared for us since the creation of the world. Read Matthew 25:35-46 and determine if you are presently a sheep or a goat. Don’t You Know Don’t you know the time has come When the world will finally see the one Who’ll avenge all the pure in heart And will judge all those who have played a part In the sin that rules this world today And account for all they’ve had to say And all the promises that you have read Will come to pass surely as He said Don’t you know There’s no place to run no place to go When you can disguise your heart and soul Don’t you know? Time will draw the curtains And God’s words will tell it all And everything that you’ve believed in Will either stand or it will fall And everything that you have strived for Will have been or will not be And the race that you’ve been running Will have finished and you’ll see the final score So look within your heart And take the time to see If everything you are Is who you want to be Author Renee’ Lovelace “Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.” Acts 20:32 “Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homo-sexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers now swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 As a man of promise, one who has put behind him the old self and has become a new creation in Christ, one who has laid down their pride and surrendered control of their lives to God, one who has counted the cost of following Jesus and has thrown down his net to do so, one who’s life is a reflection of the Micah Seal: (I am an everlasting covenant with Jesus Christ. I am to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with my God. In submission to His authority and Lordship over and in my life under obedience to Him in all my ways for all my days.) Is a man who has been washed, sanctified and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. He’s a man of Inheritance and is truly the sheep of God’s hand. Read 1 Corinthians 15:50-58 to determine if you are willing to pay the cost. Paying the cost is to stand firm, let nothing move you, always giving yourself fully to the work of the Lord, for you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. Being a man of promise is to have integrity in what you believe. To be firm and unwavering in your faith, to trust your heavenly Father with your very life, with the very essence of who you are. And to walk with him unashamedly being a living testimony to all who look upon. Who in your life can you be a living testimony to? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SUBMISSION Submitting To God’s Will “Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older, all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’ Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Amen.” 1 Peter 5:5-11 Submission is very important to God. Let’s look at some scriptures talking about different areas of submission: Look these up and write down in the space provided what each verse means to God in the way of submission and a plan of action to accomplish this in your daily life; Romans 13:1 ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ James 4:1-12 ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1 Peter 2:13-25 ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Write down the areas of your life you have demonstrated submission in: ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It’s time that you lay down that which holds you. Write down the areas of your life that you need to become submissive to God to: ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ELECTION Make Your Election Sure “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall.” 2 Peter 1:5-11 Read Romans 11:25-32 concerning God’s standing on election. What is your understanding of election by God? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It is in fact by grace a privilege given unto us and this is what he has called us to make sure, to not take advantage of this grace that has been given to us, to not throw it by the way side, to carry this knowledge as a treasure of great value and to walk in its way. “Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” 2 Peter 1:4 Choose to be an effective productive Christian, a man of God who has the power through Jesus Christ his Lord and Savior to escape the corruption in this world. Always knowing that everything is permissible for you, but not everything is beneficial and that even though everything is permissible for you, you will not become mastered by any of it, through the power and the strength of the Lord Jesus Christ. Take your stand, make your promise. If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything. It is my desire that through this study and the power of the Holy Spirit, that you will exchange all that you are for all that He is, remaining firm until the end.
